In this article, let us show you our guide to making the skull pumpkin of your dreams! Skull designs are great to use for this very special holiday. It's a time to honor our dead and make the kids happy. 🎃
You'll discover how to make your skull pumpkin by cutting into the flesh of this famous vegetable on October 31. And our big plus: how to draw a skull on a pumpkin without having to cut into it.
After reading this article, you'll know exactly how to make a good impression on the big day and scare all your friends. Are you ready? Let's get started!
Make your own Skull Pumpkin
Here's what you need to make the most demonic pumpkin ever:
- A pumpkin (as big as possible)
- A knife
- A vegetable peeler
- A thumbtack or a pen
- Scotch tape
You can choose not to use a shape template to make your drawing. But since we are not all very talented artists, here is a template! You can easily print out the drawing below by saving the image. It will serve as a template to draw much more simply on your pumpkin. If this template doesn't totally suit you, feel free to take a look on Pinterest for example to find another skull image. ☠️
Next, cut off the top of the pumpkin, clean it completely by removing the seeds and pulp. When it is clean inside, you can tape your skull design to the pumpkin.
Now it's time to start tracing. Some people prefer to draw the outline with a pencil. Others use a knife to make the marks. It's up to you to choose what works best for you. The most common way is to hold the large vegetable on your lap or put it on a table to be at the right height. 💀
You can also use tools as needed: A saw, screwdriver, or any other tool is welcome if you're more comfortable than the ones we talked about right before.
Our design has a lot of shapes and details, so you can only drill holes around the main shapes you are sure you want to carve. The details seem pretty hard to do, but everyone will choose how detailed they want their pumpkin to be! Be sure to keep a copy of the design next to you to guide you through the finer details that can be drawn once you remove the pattern from your pumpkin.
We recommend cutting out some of the outline shapes with a knife. Then use the tip of your vegetable peeler to connect the dots and cut out the other shapes just deep enough to show the skull correctly. You can also use a cutter or chisel to do the bulk of the work, then the finishing touches.
Skull Pumpkin Design
Many pumpkins are orange. But don't forget the white ones... They are just as evil! And this time, we will not dig in the flesh of the vegetable, but simply draw on it. The result is often just as hot. And even more when you adopt both. A white pumpkin with a skull drawing next to the orange pumpkin where you cut the skull in its flesh, and Halloween takes a whole new turn!
For this one, here's the list of what we'll need:
- A pumpkin
- Carbon paper
- Scotch tape
- A pen
- A marker
When it comes to permanent marker, we found that some worked much better than others, so make sure the markers you plan to use work well on your pumpkin! ✍️
Start by carefully taping the carbon paper to the pumpkin. Try to only cover a small portion of the carbon paper, as this will leave a mark on the pumpkin (the mark from the tape sticker). Then, glue your skull and crossbones design on top of it, still with your tape
Skull 33 Tip: Using carbon paper to make the design appear will also work if you carve the pumpkin. You can use a toothbrush and water with a little soap to remove any extra carbon after you remove the design and the paper underneath. Also, if you only have an orange pumpkin, you can paint the area you plan to carve with white acrylic paint.
Use a pen or pencil to trace the shapes of the skull design. Then remove the template and carbon paper, go over the carbon lines with a permanent marker and fill in the design with the colors you want!
And that's it, your pumpkin is done! Be sure to send us pictures of your work and share your experience in the comment section below if you wish. And for an even crazier Halloween, we have your solution! Wear a skull mask for a terrifying look and scare your whole neighborhood. Just click on the image below to see the hottest of them all.
